If you’ve dreamt of becoming a hairdresser, but your vision is more styling Katy Perry backstage at T in the Park than doing countless blue rinses in your local village salon, then a career with Rainbow Room International could be right up your street. Founded in 1979 by Linda and Alan Stewart, the multi-award winning business began with just one salon, and has grown to encompass twelve salons plus a state of the art training academy- which is where you come in!
Linda says, “At Rainbow Room we believe you have to enjoy coming to work, be rewarded, have fun and most importantly feel valued. This is always at the forefront of everything we do. We believe that whatever an individual wants out of their career, we can provide the training and opportunities to help achieve it.
“We’ve won a host of awards recognising our training, customer care and creativity at the British Hairdressing Awards, and are considered the biggest and most successful salon group in Scotland. Most recently we won Scottish Hairdresser of the Year and Best Salon Team in the UK at the 2012 ceremony.”
Renowned for their training and education, your career at Rainbow Room begins in an assistant role, where you spend one year progressing towards your NVQ Level 2. Your NVQ Level 3 takes another year, and you also receive in-house training during this time.
On completion of both qualifications, prior to taking up a stylist role at a Rainbow Room salon, all assistants must complete six months intensive training, splitting their time between the Training Academy on Glasgow’s Howard Street, and the Fame Academy in Royal Exchange Square. The crème de la crème comes in the form of that elusive stylist position, which could find you climbing to the top of the Rainbow Room career ladder, earning a great salary and brilliant bonuses along the way.
“As a promotion is achieved at each level, the basic pay, commission, holidays, monthly bonuses and annual bonuses increase,” explains Alan. “Through continuous education and coaching, this structure allows top hairdressers to earn in the excess of £60,000 per annum.
“We also have salon incentives every month, all expenses paid nights out quarterly, and our annual company congress which takes place in a beautiful castle location. There are opportunities to join the art team and travel internationally to hair shows, not to mention styling celebrities such as Ke$ha, Emeli Sande and Florence Welch backstage at T in the Park and Belladrum festival.”
Of course, styling isn’t the only job prospect within Rainbow Room International; you could eventually own your own franchise! “If you decide to take the management development route, you could go from being a team leader to a salon manager, then one day own a Rainbow Room franchise,” says Alan. “The opportunities are literally endless.”
