With a daily schedule dedicated to checking out every hot new business that hits Glasgow, Briony Cullin’s food blog took her from lecturing in Law to wining and dining for a living. As Yelp Glasgow’s Community Manager, she now hosts events all over the city and works to connect Glasgwegians with passionate local businesses. Nobody knows Glasgow like Briony.
When did you first discover your sweet tooth for exploring the world of food and drink?
I’ve always really loved food and when I first moved to Glasgow, I struggled to find a good place to read about it. That’s why I started my blog, to write about cool food places. After a few years of that, I ended up working for Yelp as the Glasgow Community Manager and now reading, writing and enjoying Glasgow is my full time job!
How did you spend your free time before landing this role?
I’ve played roller derby for Glasgow Roller Derby for over two years which is a super fun way to spend my time and get fit! Before starting at Yelp, I spent a lot more time blogging, and now I write my reviews on Yelp as I love sharing them with the Yelp community.
How did you progress from writing a food blog to checking out new events in the city?
I was new to Glasgow and wanted to get out to meet people. After I was blogging for a while, I started getting invites to restaurant and bar openings which was an awesome way to meet other bloggers and people who love food in Glasgow. I love checking out Glasgow events because everyone is so friendly and welcoming, even if you don’t know anyone.
What sort of characteristics does a role like yours require?
Passion! I think that’s the most important part – being passionate about Glasgow and the wonderful community. Other important parts of the job are having lots of fun, being social and being very organised!
What tips could you give to writers who want to build their blogs?
It sounds so simple, but read and write as much as you can. Read other blogs that inspire you, and think about what they do that you appreciate. I love well written blogs where the writer is enthusiastic about their content – I think that’s the most important part.
How can writers use their blogs to bag their dream job?
If you’re writing about what you love and keep working at it, then that is a great advertisement for you as a candidate: it shows that you’re dedicated, passionate and tenacious.
What’s next for you as an Events Community Manager?
We have some fabulous events coming up in Glasgow in the next few months and Yelp will be adding a bit of extra sparkle and fun to them. We’re also celebrating Yelp’s 10th Birthday in August at a brand new, amazing venue in Merchant City. Top secret for now – you’ll have to keep your eyes on the Yelp Glasgow Events page to come along!
And finally, what’s the best part of your job?
The people. I meet such wonderful people every day, and interacting with the Yelp community is such a joy. Glasgow is a wonderful city and getting to be part of the Yelp community who are friendly, passionate and interesting is what makes me get out of bed every day.
