We are very excited to have had the opportunity to talk to fashion designer George Beresford, the creative mind behind fashion label Blvck Souls. George (24) has managed to successfully create his own clothing line and produce items worn by the likes of Rita Ora. From his bedroom in Kirkintilloch to the bustling streets of New York, George is definitely one to watch.
At what age did your passion for fashion and design start?
My love for fashion and design has always been a huge part of my life. For as far back as I can remember I found myself to be the kid in school that would join rock/metal bands and find myself only there to design and create the bands merchandise. It has always been a real great love of mine.
What was your first gig in the fashion/design industry?
My first real break in fashion came a few years ago, when I was approached by an Orange County based musician called Jeffree Star who at the time was signed by Akon. This was a great blessing as it allowed me to take my first major step into the industry and gave me a chance to advertise my work to a much greater audience.
What kind of jobs have you done previously, did you ever think then that your work would be such a success?
I have been fortunate enough to work with some fantastic independent brands. In regards to success, It would be strange to say that I never expected it to be somewhat successful. I’ve always designed out of love for creating new and individual things and only down to the amazing customers that have accompanied me along my journey, have I been fortunate enough to see my hobby progress into a business. Something which I am forever grateful for.
At what point did this become a career and not a hobby?
I’d put it down to the release of Rita Ora’s music video for single “Shine Ya Light”. Overnight the brand seemed to appear on many online blogs and in the following days its products were seen popping up in huge publications such as ELLE and Glamour Magazine. The demand for certain products was incredible. It definitely took me by surprise in the most amazing way.
Where does your inspiration come from when designing new items?
In the beginning I designed with myself in mind, when I began designing shirts it would always be something that I’d want to purchase but couldn’t find. I took to creating my own shirts which over time gained some attention. Now my inspiration tends to come from anywhere.
How did it feel to have popular musicians such as Rita Ora wearing your designs?
It was truly one of the most incredible moments of my life. Even to this day I still get excited when I see her pictures pop up online wearing it on the Letterman Show or even when her music video appears on TV. It’s rather crazy and surreal.
Who has been the most influential person you have met as a result of Blvck Souls clothing?
My great friend Jillian Mercado. I was incredibly fortunate enough to attend New York Fashion week with her recently. Jillian is a Native New Yorker, she suffers from muscular dystrophy, however this does not stop her. She has taken the fashion industry by storm, became one of the current faces for Diesels We Are Connected campaign, and began working as the executive editor for WeTheUrban Magazine. Ive never came across someone who radiates so much inspiration and creativity.
What is next on the cards for the brand as it moves forward and becomes increasingly popular?
This month will see the brand’s newest lookbook and video trailer drop online, this will be followed by the release of the newest season stock. All of which will be available to see on the web site soon.
