Primers are definitely the Marmite product of the beauty world: some people swear they are the only thing that will stop their foundation from melting off, whilst others insist they are nothing more than a gimmick and waste of money. Primers are essentially designed to act like a ‘glue’ (though they’re never thick and sticky) to ensure makeup adheres to the skin properly. They are also designed to ‘prep’ the skin in terms of filling in fine lines and smoothing dry patches to ensure a flawless foundation application is possible. Personally, I’m with those who love primers and I’m always on the look-out for new ones that will give me the perfect base on which to build my foundation. I’m currently loving Monu’s Illuminating Primer SPF15 (£24.50 for 50ml) as it not only helps make my foundation last all day but leaves my skin with a lovely glow. To use it, I apply a pea-sized amount all over my skin after cleansing and toning, let it sink in then apply my foundation and concealer with a Beauty Blender (£16) as normal. Monu are a natural skincare brand who are completely against testing on animals. The primer is actually part of their skincare line and is, as a result, really nourishing so it’s great for people like me who suffer from dry skin. It’s also formulated using light-reflecting particles so it gives the skin a lovely, healthy glow and looks wonderful under heavier foundations such as Estee Lauder’s Double Wear which, when worn alone, can sometimes leave the skin looking a little bit flat. It’s also paraben-free and contains no synthetic perfumes or colour so I think that it would be ideal for people with sensitive skin. This product actually reminds me of my beloved Tom Ford Protective Primer (£52) as it has the same thick consistency and leaves my skin looking visibly brighter and more radiant. On the plus side, the Monu version is less than half the price and is every bit as good. Monu’s Illuminating Primer SPF15 is available for £24.50. Are you a lover or a hater or primers?
