There aren’t many people who look as good as Johnny Depp does at the age of 48. They say men age better than women, but surely nobody has any right to look as dashing as Depp does two year’s shy of his half century?
He isn’t just good looking though; the American is as sartorially elegant as he is seriously eccentric. When we think of Depp’s clothes we think of open shirt collars, three piece suits, 1930’s glasses and ostentatious footwear. Oh and the hat.
The hat we can take or leave admittedly. Some have said it’s only there to hide his receding hairline, but we think he’s still got what it takes to pull off snazzy headwear. Who else would stroll the red carpet wearing a fedora? Nobody as effortlessly suave as Mr Depp that’s for sure.
Depp can certainly afford sharp suits and a good tailor to fine tune everything, but his own little additions of antique pocket watches, brooches, necklaces and colourful belts bring his personal flair to the fore. Another reason we think of Johnny Depp as something of a fashion icon is that he has been involved with some of the most stylish women on the planet. Winona Ryder the ‘it’ girl of the early ‘90s, supermodel Kate Moss and his current squeeze French musician Vanessa Paradis are hardly plain Janes when it comes to the style stakes.
While his off screen dress sense is almost impeccable, it could be argued his onscreen outfits are even more impressive. Edward Scissorhands for example put the G into cinema Goth. Captain Jack Sparrow is the most dapper sea dog ever to have appeared on screen. Even Depp’s downbeat, tweedy bookseller Dean Corso in supernatural thriller Ninth Gate would turn heads on the high street.
While most actors hitting 50 take life a little easier, Depp doesn’t look like he’ll be following the lead of George Clooney and company. Still as dishevelled and dapper as ever, the actor has agreed to an eclectic run of new movies, playing everything from a vampire to the Lone Ranger’s Native American sidekick. Here’s to the next half century Mr Depp!
