Glasgow is a city of buskers, and back in 2007 a group of string players banded together to form the Cairn String Quartet. Now a 12 piece, they’re going from strength to strength. Having performed with artists including Emeli Sande, Echo and the Bunnymen and Professor Green, opened the 2012 Glasgow West End Festival, filled the Kaleidoscope tent at T in the Park 2012, and provided the soundtrack to adverts by L’Oreal and Geordie Shore, the Quartet are fundraising for a trip to play SXSW in Austin, Texas by hosting a gig at Platform in Glasgow this evening.
Billed as the Cairn String Quartet and Friends, we’d be lying if we said we weren’t pretty jealous of their group of mates. Performers include Aidan Moffat, R.M. Hubbert, Emma Pollock, Miaoux Miaoux, The Twilight Sad, Francis Macdonald (Teenage Fanclub), Call To Mind, Errors, David Macgregor (Kid Canaveral), Solareye (Stanley Odd), Hector Bizerk and Gasp, and Lou Hickey. Tickets are just £10 from Tickets Scotland or £15 with a bus leaving from Monorail and special guest DJ.
The Cairn String Quartet themselves will be launching their ‘quartetquickies’ album, have special one-of-a-kindness mixtapes of their favourite unreleased recordings and very cool “Pluck Me, It’s The Cairn String Quartet” T-shirts available at the gig, and as if that wasn’t enough, they’ll be raffling off some very special prizes too. This is bound to be a belter of a night and you’ll be kicking yourself if you miss out.
What’s more (yes, there’s even more!) if you’ve still got your party hat on after tonight’s gig, you can use your ticket stub to land yourself a Beer Geek ticket for £5 instead of £15, which nets you an evening of even more bands and, of course, loads of great beer.
