“I LOVE my job!”
We have got some innovative speakers from the Creative Industries lined up for our Futures Fest in March. The enthusiastic Samantha McEwen is no exception. Owner and fashion designer of clothes label Isolated Heroes, her work showcases the creative brain of Henry Holland crossed with H.G. Wells. The brand has recently gained sponsorship from Asos and has stores in London, Hong Kong and Australia.
So what does Samantha love so much about working in fashion? “The best thing about it would have to be how different each day is. Some days we are designing new collections. Some days we are sending massive wholesale orders to exciting new stockists and other days we are getting to create one off items for celebrities and music videos. I love every minute of it, even when we are working in the studio until 4am!”
Hard graft is necessary if you want to make your creative vision a reality. To those aspiring designers, Samantha says: “Believe in yourself! Have patience: you aren’t going to become a successful business overnight. It takes hard work and determination and you need to find your signature style and develop your skills. Be prepared to work long hours and late nights, however – the results will be more than rewarding.”
Isolated Heroes’ signature style is space-age, colourful and 90s, complete with Clueless quotes printed on beanie hats. They describe their customers as a ‘kaleidoscopic tribe of cyber barbies and lost boys.’ We asked Samantha for her top three sources of inspiration this season. “We draw inspiration from so many different things. Right now its Jayne Mansfield’s pink barbie house, Super Kawaii fluffy coats and 60s sci fi!” Wacky does not cover it.
If you want success in the fashion world, you must be dedicated and passionate. In any other job, Samantha says: “I would be miserable! I genuinely can’t imagine myself doing anything else.”
Does this sound like you? If you share the love and creativity that goes into a label like Isolated Heroes, be sure not to miss the seminar at Futures Fest. Their owner will be giving “an insight into how the fashion industry works from a small brand perspective and advice on how to break into the industry.”
