Before coming to Scotcampus, I had never been in a real working environment. Although I had already written a feature for the Scotcampus Magazine, I was still understandably quite nervous about actually coming into the office and doing proper work. I had heard horror stories from other students who had been on work experience at newspapers etc and been the office slave for a week! However, from the moment I met Aileen and the team, I was made to feel very welcome and part of the magazine.
The first day was a productive one, creating a feature on the Oscars and Leonardo DiCaprio. After the feature was complete I began work promoting next weeks Futures Fest! This years event has a number of fantastic guest speakers, so it was my job to get in touch with as many speakers as possible to organise a live twitter Q+A to help promote their organisation and Futures Fest in general!
Most of the speakers that I got in touch with were more than happy to do the interviews so arranged to do them at the end of the week. Each one of the speakers had something interesting and valuable to say, so Futures Fest is sure to be a great opportunity for people looking for employment tips.
Once the live Q+As were completed it was time do some more promotional work, so myself, the other intern Amanda and PR officer Craig went out and scoured the town looking for shops, clubs, bars and pubs that would put up our promotional posters and leaflets. It was a long afternoon but extremely productive in terms of raising awareness of the event!
This week has sadly flown in as we have been having tons of fun going out to colleges and different universities, doing PR work and helping Craig give a number of talks to different courses. This was a fantastic experience and it helped me build confidence when talking to people I don’t know.
Today was my last day of the 2 week internship and I brought in doughnuts from the amazing Deli downstairs as a thank you to Aileen and the team for giving me the experience. Although it was my last day, work went on as usual. Throughout the day I interviewed Commonwealth hopeful athlete Haris Ansari and wrote up a feature for next months magazine issue.
Looking back on my 2 weeks I really can say I’ve not had a dull day working for the magazine. I would just like to say a massive thank you to Aileen, Graeme, Jill, Valerie, Neil and Craig for giving me the opportunity and making the 2 weeks a great experience. I really wish I wasn’t leaving, but hopefully in the future I can produce more work for the magazine!
