Girlbands have long been known as cool, sisterly and full to the brim with girl-power- from the cult of The Spice Girls to the sex-oozing Girls Aloud and the sunny disposition of The Saturdays. The UK’s latest bundle of creative talent shows no sign of disproving these fabulous girl band stereotypes.
Belle Amie – made up of Esther Campbell, Rebecca Creighton and Sophia Wardman- were thrown together as a foursome in the final stages of boot camp in 2010. Geneva Lane left the band at the start of the year leaving the band to embark on their debut single ‘Girls Up’ as a threesome.
In the midst of a completing a successful support slot on Chipmunk’s tour, moving in together and promoting their single; Belle Amie talk fashion, the X Factor and the glue that holds it all together- good old-fashioned girl power. “I have a bit of a strange obsession with Timmy Mallet,” starts Sophie. The blonde Northener shares a mutual love for fashion with her band mates. “Timmy Mallett and the 80s are big fashion inspirations for me, so anything clashing and animated is my thing. I really admire Henry Holland and I’m a massive fan of dressing as a boy. I love the preppy look.”
Rebecca creates a cute fashion contrast with her love of the 40’s and 50’s. “I love Katy Perry,” admits Rebecca, “And Dita Von Teese because she’s hot! I really love figure hugging dresses and cute accessories. “And I’m the urban girl,” smiles Esther. “I love girls like Rhianna and Cassie. I would describe my style as young, girly but fierce and edgy. I’m quite a matchy girl unlike the other two crazies. I like simple colours. I’m loving Doc Martins at the moment too.”
The girls first single ‘Girls Up’ is one for the girls. It’s an empowering song for women. Sophie explains: “The message is to love yourself, whoever you are. Whether you want to paste your face in makeup, wear hair extensions, get a boob job, or if you love wearing no make-up and hate brushing your hair! Girls should stand strong and be proud of who we are, together.”
The girls fantastic fashion sense is fascinating in their first music video as a three-piece. “The styling in the video was all our own influences,” Rebecca spills. “We wanted to introduce ourselves as, ourselves! Most of the outfits in the video were from our own wardrobes. We customised a lot of them ourselves too.”
“We wanted to show our individual characters and styles,” says Sophie.”Whether your part of a band or not, everyone is different. And we are all so different. We weren’t going to try and kid anyone that we like dressing the same.” And that’s what makes Belle Amie.
As we all glue ourselves to the X Factor live shows, the girls are in the exact same boat. Rebecca admits: “We totally love it, we are all obsessed. Soph starts counting down the minutes until it’s on and we all watch it together. It’s been a little bit sad watching it having been on the show last year. We’re so jealous of everyone who is on it now. The contestants are going to have so much fun. We have kept in touch with other contestants from last year. Aiden, Diva Fever, Paije and also Matt and Niall when they aren’t being superstars.”
“It’s nice to be in touch,” says Esther, “We had such a crazy experience together last year.”
