Wednesday 14th November 2012: Before I started interning at Mallzee I had done a few internships in the fashion industry, but had never experienced working within a start-up company. I had always been interested in learning about how a business is set up from the inside and what it actually takes to grow a start-up. From day one at Mallzee I’ve been learning new aspects of business and have experienced firsthand how much there is to consider. From technical ‘stuff’ (you can probably tell I’m not a technical person!) to researching styles and trends (now that’s something I can deal with!) all bases must be covered.
Today I have been focusing on researching companies to approach about partnering with us. There’s a lot to consider when doing this; if their target customer matches ours, if they meet the requirements that we need, the competition- and this is all before we even approach them! Although the process of researching companies is quite long, part of the research involves going on the websites of the companies and having a browse through the clothes, which is quite enjoyable!
Today I have also been assisting Cally with designing our site map and deciding on the layout that Mallzee will have when we launch. It was really exciting to see how it is going to look and being a part of the planning of it all.
From working at Mallzee there are a few things I’ve learnt that I think are extra important:
A hardworking and knowledgeable team
At Mallzee our team is relatively small, but we work really well together. We’re lucky that our knowledge and skills complement each other and we all have a great time together too!
A good plan
It’s so important to always plan ahead. Working with Mallzee has really made me realise the importance of planning. As cheesy as it may sound, the saying “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail” really is true!
Passion for the cause
Being passionate about what you’re doing is so important. People can tell when you’re passionate about something and will really take interest if you are. In a business there will always be setbacks, but if you’re truly excited about what you’re doing then it will keep you motivated to get past them.
At Mallzee we’re not just all about business, we make sure we have time for fun too! We always try to squeeze in a team dinner to get together and celebrate our hard work after a successful week. This week we went for our team dinner at Café Andaluz in Glasgow. The food was amazing and it was great to chat about all the exciting things that we’ve been working on.
Having a business degree is useful, but experiencing business by interning at a company really puts knowledge into practice. It’s so interesting to see how the things you learn in lectures and out of textbooks are translated into real life- and the team dinners are always a plus!
