The much anticipated 2014 Oscars were set to be Leonardo DiCaprio’s golden moment, it was surely his time to finally win an award. This year he was up for Best Actor for his lead role in “The Wolf of Wall Street”. Weeks of public speculation passed, the stage is set, fingers are crossed, and the winner is… Matthew McConaughey.
It’s the fourth time poor Leo has been nominated for an Oscar and come up second best which has led to the sudden twitter trend “#poor Leo”. With every film he works on he builds a stronger fan base and as a result raises public demand to see him win an Oscar. Although he is now 39 years old (yes 39!) his youthful looks mean he is still relatively young in terms of acting and still able to play characters half his age.
He seems to enjoy playing the young rich philanthropist type character as we can see in his recent work in “The Great Gatsby” and “The Wolf of Wall Street”. Both roles see him portray a young enthusiastic but poor man who climbs up the social ladder and out of his low status into the life of a playboy billionaire. Once he is a wealthy rich man we see him struggle with the stress and power that his money brings. His success is reached by any means necessary which ultimately results in his downfall as it quickly comes back to haunt him.
Leo portrays these young men brilliantly and was deservedly nominated for his humorous and witty performance as fraudster and stockbroker, Jordan Belfort. His performance and interaction with supporting actor Jonah Hill (nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his performance) had audiences crying with laughter from the moment they first meet on screen – and it wasn’t only because of Jonah’s hilarious glow in the dark white teeth! Both performances were fantastic and on screen and there wasn’t a dull moment between them so it was a huge surprise that neither won their nominated category.
Although this is the fourth time Leo has slumped at the Oscars, he will undoubtedly bounce back from defeat as usual and continue to produce flawless performances that will get him recognised at future Oscars. We are all looking forward to see what he does next!
