Spring has sprung, the sun is shining (well, as much as it does in Scotland) and it’s time to make your wardrobe a whole lot prettier. Pastels popped up all over the S/S 2012 runways, from Louis Vuitton’s carousel of candy colours to Calvin Klein’s near nude hues, so step away from the black, banish the boring and get ready to unleash your inner pastel princess…
Think of your favourite ice cream flavours: mint choc chip, strawberry, maybe even lemon sorbet? These are now your new season inspirations, giving your sweet tooth some serious calorie-free satisfaction. For a chic daytime look think Gossip Girl’s golden gal Serena Van Der Woodsen rocking peach palazzo pants, a nude vest and duck egg blue jewels on the Upper East Side. A slightly different take on the pastel palette works equally as well, with Zara’s minty fresh pleated wide-legged trousers (£39.99) killing a good three trends in one purchase. Team with Topshop’s peach scalloped vest (£15), throw on some long gold chains and rock some enviably wavy locks for your own take on Serena style.
The key to this trend is not to try and tone it down. Pastels can be cheapened when teamed with black, so don’t be afraid to mix up your pale palette and rock them head to toe. If this strikes fear into your monochrome heart then consider using white as your base instead of black. Those Zara trousers would look equally fierce with a slouchy white pocket tee (£12.99) from H&M tucked in, setting off a pre-summer glow perfectly.
After dark, kick the trend up a notch and let it become unapologetically girlie. Sprinkle on frou frou ruffles, bows and sugary sequins, channel Zooey Deschanel’s dress-loving style and remember: more is more. ASOS is a one-stop shop for skater dresses in shades of parma violet, candyfloss pink and juicy lemon, and with prices from £20 you’ll have enough change left for a few rounds of jagerbombs at the weekend. Always a bonus! If you’d still prefer to stick to separates then check out H&M for skinny trousers across the whole colour spectrum from £14.99.
Still too afraid to candy coat yourself? Dip a toe in the pastel pool with a shiny new spring handbag. Topshop’s mint green bowling bag is a steal at £36, giving you the perfect excuse to buy the quilted leather purse (£16) to match. If you’re more of a shoe fiend then Office’s blue suede Wonderland wedges (£75) are guaranteed to have you scrambling down the rabbit hole and into your own sugary sweet paradise. Katy Perry eat your heart out!
