Playing in a room barely big enough to swing a cat, is perhaps not what you would expect an International music icon to be doing but that’s just what happened the other night when Prince went round to his new best pals house, Lianne La Havas, for a chat to a very select audience. Not only did the pint-sized pop star reveal plans for a new album, he’s also planning on hanging around London, ‘until people don’t want to hear us anymore.’
No tour dates have been announced but Prince – backed by his all female band 3rd Eye Girl – did make an impromptu appearance at London’s Electric Ballroom the other night and he now plans to play a series of intimate shows for as little as $10 (£6). Here’s why we’re excited to have the Purple Rain singer back:
Anything Can Happen
Back in the 90s Prince decided he no longer needed something as trivial as a name and so instead became an absolutely unpronounceable symbol. The sign was later deemed ‘The Love Symbol’ and by 2000 the ‘Artist Formerly Known as Prince’ decided to once again become plain old Prince.
He doesn’t make much sense
As great as Prince is at writing funky upbeat songs such as Raspberry Beret and Alphabet Street, he doesn’t always convert that lyrical prowess into real world conversations. Back in 2006 he declared that, ‘the internet is completely over’ and ‘all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can’t be good for you.’ Yeah… OK Prince, think you might be onto something there.
It’s the 30th Anniversary of Purple Rain
This year marks a milestone for a truly classic album. ‘Purple Rain’ was released in June 1984 and is readily ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time. The sublime When Doves Cry and the uplifting Lets Go Crazy both feature and have been covered many times by artists over the years.
He’s just made a cameo appearance on our favourite show New Girl
Timing is everything and no doubt Prince’s PR team were aware that the hit American show – starring everyone’s favourite female Zooey Deschanel – would air right at the time Prince was due to land in London. The episode hasn’t aired over here yet but we’ve heard from across the pond that it heavily involves pancakes (of course) and that Prince gives his acting chops a good workout. We can’t wait to see it.
Oh yeah, he has a new album and single coming out
In a time where Beyonce is releasing albums without any PR at all Prince has decided that the best way to showcase his new music is to take it back to the people. A new album is forthcoming, entitled ‘Plectrum Electrum’ (of course) with the first single called, Pretzel Body Logic – why would it be called anything else? Now all we need is for the star to announce he’s coming north of the border to play it. Hurrah!
