The Scottish Alternative Music Awards 2014 (SAMA 14) returns to The Garage Nightclub this Friday 7th March to celebrate the best of Scottish music. Now in its 5th consecutive year, Scotcampus chats to Richy Muirhead, founder of the awards, to find out more about what inspired him to create the alternative awards and the key of SAMA success.
Why did you first start the awards? What is the story behind them?
About 5 years ago I took part in MTV’s Fanwalk, which was a 10 day walk from Hamburg to Berlin to the MTV Europe Music Awards with 99 other music fans. When we reached Berlin one of us was invited to present an award live on stage, which was to Placebo. That whole trip changed me, and I became interested in forming music awards located in Scotland which was more suited to my musical tastes and could push artists forward. Bizarrely, that led to me creating the Scottish Alternative Music Awards.
The awards are now into their 5th year, what gives you the drive to keep the awards going each year?
I really enjoy it. Each year is different, and discovering the new talent, testing new ideas is a big part of it for me. I’m also very driven, I don’t like to start something and not finish it!
How is SAMA 14 funded?
At the moment we are funded only by sponsorship. We are very fortunate to work with brands such as Gorbals Sounds, CitizenM, The Academy Of Music & Sound, Cathouse Glasgow, EMUBANDS, Splitter Scotland, Bar Bloc, and Red Dog Music.
How do you get so many good bands to perform year after year?
We build a lot of relationships with the nominees/winners and it’s always nice to have them involved in our events.
Are there any tickets left? If yes how can people get their hands on them?
Via Tickets-Scotland for as low as £10 http://bit.ly/1hj535S.
What are you looking forward to the most at this years awards?
For me personally I love the thrill of announcing who has won each award, it’s a great atmosphere!
Is there a front runner to win this year?
Not at all, because we use a unique public vote it could really go anyway… We’ll keep you posted on Friday night with the winners!
