Red Raw @ The Stand
Red Raw at The Stand is known for being one of the best new comedy nights across the country. A weekly night in Edinburgh (Monday) and Glasgow (Tuesday) it offers up the chance to catch around ten acts a night for only £2 meaning you can be paying around 20p per act, so to call it a good deal would be a pretty big understatement. Red Raw is the show that all new comedians start out on, and those who make the audiences laugh the most soon become regulars at the club. If you’re lucky some famous faces drop by from time to time to test out their new material on The Stand’s loyal audiences so there’s no telling who could walk on the stage next. Just one thing to remember, the night is always busy so it’s worth booking a ticket or turning up early as shows tend to sell out fast.
Breakneck Comedy@ SNAFU/Blue Lamp
For people living in and around Aberdeen, Breakneck Comedy is one of the best places to go as it becomes one of the fastest growing nights in the north of the country. The main night takes place on Tuesday evenings at SNAFU with a weekly Friday and Saturday night slot at the Blue Lamp. Bookings are a mixture of the top acts from across the country with local comedians eager to showcase their new material and build up a fan base. The Club also often hosts open mic nights in a bid to find some new undiscovered talent before anyone else, so it’s pretty likely you will come across the odd comedian you can brag about to your friends before.
Hairy WattComedy Club @ Heriot Watt University
Hairy Watt Comedy Club is just one of many new comedy clubs popping up at Universities across the country. It’s on every other Tuesday during term time, which means the club is just about to re-open to students as the new term begins. The club has a good record of putting on fresh faced comedians who are happy to try out their material on a new audience, but it also pulls in a lot of established acts who add the Hairy Watt Comedy Club to their touring plans. And for only £3 a ticket, it’s hardly going to break the student loan balance.
For people looking for more than just a stand-up club, Jongleurs is the perfect place for a night out. Situated in both Edinburgh and Glasgow it’s the type of comedy club best suited for university nights out, birthdays or any other kind of party. The shows kick off every Friday and Saturday night and it’s not just about how much you will laugh – there’s food, drinks and lots of dancing too. While it’s not as original as venues like The Stand, if you want comedy in a lively club type environment then Jongleurs is where you should be headed.
