Whether you’re an avid follower of fashion or not, one cannot have failed to have noticed and very possibly embraced (intentionally or otherwise) the trend sweeping our local High Streets. Unlike many trends, this one appears to be all encompassing – it has been adopted by men and women alike and people of all ages. In fact, you are just as likely to see a fashion-conscious, spotty teen sporting this seasons version of the Puffa jacket as you are a Granny getting her messages at Sainsburys.
And in truth, I’m not surprised. Sure, it’s hardly the most elegant of winter outerwear but it is practical and there is a lot to be said for stepping outside on a freezing winter’s morning with, what is essentially a 13.5 tog duvet, strapped around your waist. I had one of the back in the day, a red one, which was glued to my back for most of the nineties and of all of my attire from seasons past, for whatever reason, this one stands out.
You would be hard pushed to find a designer who hasn’t released their take on this trend or a High Street shop who has not latched on. Everyone from Vivienne Westwood to All Saints and Joseph to New Look are in on the act and for those of you not yet convinced of the Puffa’s place in your wardrobe, there are options to distinguish yourself from hill walkers and dog walkers. Why not opt for something fur-trimmed or cinched at the waist (you could even add your own belt) or dare I say it…patent? As I go through the usual rigmarole of trying to locate the perfect party frock for the festive period, I can rest assured that at least I know what I’ll be wearing over it this Christmas.
