With the mercury falling and Christmas fast approaching, your ultimate purchase this month has to be a warm winter coat. Often an afterthought when putting an outfit together, your coat is the first thing onlookers are going to see throughout the chilly festive months, so it’s important it complements both your shape and your existing wardrobe. Our elusive edit takes four of the biggest catwalk coat trends and points you in the right direction to recreate them on the high street, whatever your budget.
Thanks to the A/W collections of Burberry and Alexander Wang, this nineties staple has been rescued from its North Face ski slope hell and given a high fashion overhaul. Watch out for belted details to avoid that shapeless “I’m wearing a duvet” look, and note that down filled coats will keep you cosier than synthetic filled options.
Tartan is having something of a moment right now. Perhaps it’s the effect of this year’s Disney Pixar blockbuster Brave, or maybe Auntie Viv has finally convinced the world that us Scots are quite cool in our own way. Whatever the reason, there’s plenty of scope to get on the plaid bandwagon. Look out for leather trims for extra fash pack points, or embrace this year’s superhero frenzy in a cool cape.
Fun, frivolous and a little bit flirty, faux fur is your key evening coat this winter. You have heard the saying “fur coat no knickers”, right? Well, while we’re not condoning your loss of underwear, there will always be something classically sexy about an imitation animal skin draped over a glamorous Christmas party frock. Can’t wait till after dark? Miss Selfridge’s pink angora fur looks daytime cool teamed with a midi tube skirt and biker boots.
A Brit girl staple, favoured by the likes of la Moss and Alexa Chung, a classic trench will see you through any of our inevitable Scottish downpours. Getting the right fit is a must; you should be able to comfortably button it all the way to the top with a reasonably thick jumper underneath, and still be able to lift your arms without said buttons straining and bursting open. Team with flat leather riding boots for the ultimate in Sloane chic.
