It’s days like these when I wonder whether it was always this hard to get up in the mornings.
With an ever-lasting blanket of darkness shrouding my bowl of Coco Pops and an onslaught of wet weather that refuses to allow me to dress as anything other than the Hunchback of Notre ‘Damn That’s a Lot of Layers’, I think we all could do with a boost right now.
Especially if you’re currently caught up in exams and essays- there’s no way to say goodbye to Christmas joy than with a blank exam book and five pens on hand (just in case three run out on the day).
Looking back through my Spotify account, my playlists tend to gravitate towards certain moods. Whether it was having the sweet sweet jams of Alt-J in my writing playlist providing the soundtrack to my dissertation, or creating one simply titled ‘<3’ (Emooo) filled up with David Gray and The XX, having a set list of music can help you through.
In an attempt to provide more boost to your day than an over-priced smoothie from the shopping centre, give these motivating songs a try for 2016…
The One That’s A Classic
Recorded back in 93′ when most of us were still bum-shuffling about on the floor, the lyrics can still ring true for whatever year and situation we’re in.
You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold, you gotta be wiser
You gotta be hard, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm, you gotta stay together
All I know, all I know, love will save the day
I’m still working on the 9 ‘Gotta Be’s but we’ll get there. Eventually.
The One To Get You Through Revision
The fact that this was released in 2011 is telling. This was during my third year at uni in the midst of battling for computers (Glasgow Uni Library: why did you make me walk 10 floors everyday to find somewhere to sit and procrastinate), and churning out English Lit essays so that I could make it to Thursday Night Hive.
This video will make you want to pick up a Red Bull and learn the dance all over again, but you should probably do this after your exams. It’s better to avoid the procrastination.
The One to Get You Moving
Back before Kanye went all Yeezus on us, we were treated to some old school gems. I can’t watch this video without frantically doing some sit-ups before the song’s over. The beat is perfect for working out too (while the lyrics might motivate you to either want to dance or punch something).
All the mocha lattes, you gotta do Pilates…
Little bit rude Kanye, but you’re right. I do deserve a mocha today.
The One To Calm You Down
Get the candles out, turn the laptop screen away to minimise the glare and zone out to this Coldplay classic. It’s hard to escape our own heads but it helps to widen our perspective and think about how the world is a big place. Just have a nap and remember:
And we live in a beautiful world,
Yeah we do, yeah we do
The One To Live By
Oh Ben Howard, can I please get a little heads-up next time you organise a happiness-inducing bubbly slide? In the mean-time, I’ll listen to your songs on repeat and attempt to take the lyrics on board.
Keep your head up, keep your heart strong
