As we all know, student life is sometimes a blur of essays, lecture halls, mountains of books & squeezing in just enough time for a part-time job; we need all the down time we can get our overworked hands on. It’s a good job that Glasgow happens to be one of the most vibrant student cities; here are the ten best student bars to let you unwind from those ever looming deadlines.
Students feeling classy might like to hit up Hummingbird. With its shabby chic décor and Monday to Thursday half price cocktails, it’s a well-worn student haunt. If you can’t be bothered traipsing to the West End, they also serve delicious Ketchup burgers. For some West End sophistication in the City Centre, fly down to Hummingbird.
186 Bath Street, Glasgow, G2 4HG
Cheap food and good music, Bloc is for all the rock’n’rollers on a budget. Situated on Bath Street, Bloc offers free entry on all gig and club nights. Extremely friendly on a student’s purse strings, this bar’s a cheepy and a goody!
117 Bath Street, Glasgow, G2 2SZ
A popular haunt for the indie crowd, Firewater is still a rite of passage for Glasgow-based students. Playing great rock and indie bands you’ve actually have heard of, as well as ‘sharer’ cocktail pitchers, Firewater is always a good recipe for a night out. If that’s not enough, remember on Firewater Thursdays, drinks are 90p. Can I get a yaldi?

Bread + Butter
Always a great place to go when you can’t be bothered walking to Merchant City or Sauchiehall Street, Bread + Butter is just off Buchannan Street, right next to The Chippy Doon The Lane. The drinks are super cheap, sitting at £2.50 at the weekends at £2.00 during the week, and at £5.50, even the tasty cocktails are cost-efficient. What’re more, get a good feed with the fantastic £5 canteen lunch which includes your main meal + drink (£4 if you grab the free loyalty card). Know what side your bread’s buttered on and head over to Bread + Butter.
74 Buchanan St, Glasgow G1 3AJ
Boteco Do Brazil
Bringing some latin fever sorely missing from the rainy streets of Glasgow, Boteco Do Brazil have salsa classes, open mic nights and £3.50 cocktails Sunday to Wednesday. With great Brazilian cuisine at reasonable prices, it’s perfect for the skint student dreaming of that far-away gap year.
62 Trongate, Glasgow G1 5EP
A nice chilled out bar in the heart of Merchant City; it’s spacious with two floors, which is a nice change from some of the underground dungeons-esque bars that litter the city. The large space doesn’t take away from its cool atmosphere. Homely and trendy, it’s cheaper than a lot of places in Merchant City, making it a bit of a magnet for nearby Strathy students. Get down there and make yourself at home.
80 Albion St, Glasgow, Glasgow, G1 1NY
The height of hipness, Soba offers a delicious Pan-Asian inspired food menu and drinks, with their Kiwi Chi cocktail being a personal highlight. Offers and promos keep this place a viable option for a budget, and it’s now a hotbed for students in both the West End & City Centre.
116-112 Byres Road, Glasgow, G12 8TB and 11 Mitchell Ln, Glasgow G1 3NU
Quirky interior, luxury cocktails and ping pong. What’s not to love? Hillhead Book Club is so affably cool its brining bingo back (Mondays). With an array of very ‘West End’ type of events, it’s a great place to see Hipster’s in their natural habitat. No apparent book events though, which is a bit of false advertisement on their part. Shame.
17 Vinicombe Street, Glasgow G12 8SJ
The Rum Shack
A star of the up-and-coming Southside, The Rum Shack showcases Caribbean food and culture, offering over 30 different types of rum. Only opening their doors at the end of August this year, the bar has managed to keep its initial buzz going, and is now a popular hangout for nearby students.
657–659 Pollockshaws Road, Glasgow, G41 2AB
With live music and the regular screening of sporting events, it’s easy to see why Linen 1906 is popular with student punters. Also on their roster is great pub food with modern twist, and constantly offering more than decent promos on drinks, it’s easily one of the best student bars in the Southside.
1110 Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, G41 2HG
