Does the thought of shopping for a new winter coat make you want to weep? Or, like me, do you cherish the time spent raking through the shops for that perfect wardrobe staple for the colder months? No matter how you answered, this year the high street seems to have created the ultimate trend for snappy-yet-stylish decision making when it comes to buying for winter: the coatigan. A fashion hybrid, they offer the comfort and shape of a cardigan, with the style and warmth of a coat (without the excess baggage). They may just be the perfect in-between wardrobe essential.
Coatigans may have been around for a while, but the high street has stocked up this year, and they really seem to be taking off. Topshop, River Island and Miss Selfridge have all cottoned on to the trend, offering various prints, textures and prices.
Take this one from Miss Selfridge. Priced at £49, it’s a piece that you’re going to get a lot of wear out, so why not treat yourself? Thrown over a pair of black skinnies and biker boots, it would be perfect for a relaxed day at uni. Plus, the understated Aztec design is a great way to experiment with prints without going crazy.
If you’re a bit more daring then perhaps a more prominent pattern is for you? Try this piece from Topshop. The black and white checks could transform a simple outfit into something a bit bolder and more dressed up. Try wearing it on a night out to keep yourself warm, but still chic, during the winter months.
If you’re on a budget, but still want to try out this trend, then have a hunt through Primark or even a local charity shop. Coatigans look best when they’re oversized, so even if that vintage find is several sizes too big, it could still work for you. You could even try adding a faux fur collar for extra detail if you want to customise your coatigan.
Coatigans are versatile, stylish, will keep you warm and can be layered over just about anything. Who knows, if you choose wisely you could even find yourself an absolute keeper that you can rock year after year- and what could be better than that?
