Shirts and blouses have dominated the high street for quite a while now, with collars taking centre stage. Seen on dresses, shirts and even peplum tops, they can be worn with almost anything and come in various forms, but the most current look has to be the contrast collar.
Take this piece from Missguided. The contrasted black leather on denim adds a modern twist to an otherwise older trend. The shirt could easily be worn with skinny jeans or a skater skirt for a smart/casual day look and, if you wanted to stick with the grunge vibe, you could add a pair of spiked platform boots.
Designer Phillip Lim showcased contrasted collars on plain white vests in his AW12 show, but if they aren’t quite within your price range try checking out ASOS for some pretty great alternatives, not only on shirts but dresses and coats too. If leather isn’t your thing, contrasted collars also come in various prints, colours and textures. Missguided have a great range of plain shirts with studded or leopard print collars, which help to dress up a simple look.
If you like to be a bit more creative with your outfits, and a simple contrasted collar isn’t quite doing it for you, then why not try some collar tips? Take this pair from Topshop. At just £14 they can be fixed on any collar you wish to add a little something extra to a shirt or dress. Plus, they’re a great way to channel the trend if you’re on a budget, because they can easily be switched from one outfit to another.
Whether you like the preppy, geek-chic or even grunge look, get experimenting with a contrasting collar- your wardrobe will thank you for it!
