White Vs Bright

By Jennifer Lynn

Goodbye rainy days, the sun has got his hat on and you know what that means: a rainbow, with fashion gold at the end. The Spring/Summer 2011 catwalks were awash with fluro brights; from canary yellow to shocking pink, every colour of the spectrum was covered. At the other end of the style scale, forcing you to banish those red wine cravings, were the purest whites. Neither a trend for the faint hearted, pick your tribe carefully ladies. This is white vs. bright… let battle commence!

Brights reigned supreme on the runways of Jil Sander, Gucci and Christopher Kane this season. Whether worn in a space age or ladylike style, or combined with the current seventies revival, this is one look to get you noticed. Perfect for the red carpet, actress Olivia Wilde stepped out in Gucci’s emerald and aqua hued jumpsuit, while Kylie Minogue has been spotted in one of Kane’s acid yellow lace dresses. Orange is also a key colour, as seen at Marc by Marc Jacobs, and on the stylish back of socialite Olivia Palermo.

The high street is awash with copycats, from orange blazers at New Look for £24.99, to a futuristic turquoise cut out dress at ASOS coming in at just £40. Get your fluorescent lace fix at American Apparel, with their pink lace body priced at £33. Team with H&M’s orange high waisted skirt for a clash so on-trend it hurts. Alternatively, new brand on the block Paprika, available at Debenhams, have lace dresses and crop tops in a variety of fruity hues.

If you prefer your look to be all white on the night your go-to designers are Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein and Dolce and Gabanna. Angelic lace adds texture while ethereal silks give clean, minimalist lines.

An absence of colour long favoured by Jennifer Aniston, recent additions to the all-white bandwagon include Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester and The Saturdays’ Mollie King, who have both been seen in virtuous white frocks.

Ideal for showing off a tan, head to River Island for D&G inspired lace dresses and French Connection for crisp white blouses that Francisco Costa would be proud of. River Island also reign supreme with the notoriously hard to pull off white skinny jeans. Just make sure to skip the chocolate fudge cake.
